Beyond Membership: The Power of the Co-op Community

Four special education leaders sitting together

At this year’s Back to School Kickoff for Special Education Leaders we leaned into what makes the Co-op unique and sets our work apart – our member community.

For more than 20 years the Co-op has hosted an annual back to school event for special education leaders from our member schools. The focus of these events has shifted each year to meet the needs of our members as they navigate the changing education landscape in the District. In our current climate, educators and leaders are constantly bombarded with information intended to make their jobs easier: training sessions, new platforms, data systems, reports, AI tools, etc. Over the years we have learned that no single strategy, tool, or session we offer is going to solve every challenge our members face. But what we can offer is a community with the collective expertise to tackle those challenges together!

When we say that The DC Special Education Cooperative works to create equitable and excellent educational systems where students with disabilities thrive,” we are not referring solely to Co-op staff, but to the collective power of schools and leaders relentlessly pursuing improved outcomes for our students. Our Co-op members share expertise and experiences, collaborate on resources and advocacy, solve problems, dismantle barriers, strengthen one another’s work, and support each other to ensure no leader faces this work alone.

The Co-op is not just a team Special Education leaders rely on; it’s a community they belong to.

To leverage that collective expertise, we designed an afternoon session where participants chose their own session topics and led group discussions & resource sharing. New and experienced leaders alike were able to collaborate on their most pressing issues as they prepared to start a new school year. Leaders left the session with concrete ideas for establishing strong systems, mitigating burnout, and leading meaningful professional development and connections to a community of peers ready to jump in and support them this year.

Our annual Kickoff was a reminder that the greatest resource we can offer our members is one another. No one individual has all the answers, but across the Co-op community, we have the experience, commitment, and collective expertise to find them together.
