The Transition Center currently provides educational and other support services to youth who leave the New Beginnings Youth Center (which is within the District’s secure facility for adjudicated youth) and to other young people who are under the supervision of the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.  Staff members of the Transition Center assist in preparing the young people to successfully reenter their communities, schools, and/or job training programs.

Assessing student reading and literacy needs and achievements

Assisting teachers in implementing accommodations and modifications

Developing and implementing unit plans and assessments that are aligned with the school-wide curricular framework

Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity

Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students

Assisting in the development of Individualized Education Plans for students with identified special needs, and monitoring progress toward IEP goals;

Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement.

About See Forever

See Forever Foundation is a youth development organization that operates schools and educational programs under the auspices of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School; the Maya Angelou Academy; and the Maya Angelou Transition Center.  The schools and educational programs reconnect young people to high quality educational opportunities so they realize their potential and see forever.  (www.seeforever.org)

Maya Angelou Public Charter School (MAPCS)

See Forever began its first charter school, Maya Angelou-Shaw Campus, in 1997.  Today, there are two MAPCS alternative high school campuses and one middle school campus. We currently serve about 550 students. The schools offer a rich academic curriculum that integrates a socio-emotional learning and mental health component; part-time, paid employment through internships with local businesses and non-profit organizations; an extended day with tutoring and enrichment classes; and school-related activities take place year round. Over 70% of our high school graduates have gone on to college or university to work toward credentials in skilled trades as well as associate and bachelor degrees.

Maya Angelou Academy

See Forever assumed management of the Maya Angelou Academy (formerly Oak Hill Academy) in June of 2007. The Maya Angelou Academy is the school at New Beginnings (formally, Oak Hill) Youth Center, the District’s secure facility for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent and committed to the  HYPERLINK “http://dyrs.dc.gov/dyrs/site/default.asp” Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS). The Maya Angelou Academy offers students the same positive culture and high expectations that make our Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools so successful.  All students take English, math, social studies, and science. These core curriculum classes are standards-based; aligned with the curriculum standards of the District of Columbia’s Public Schools (DCPS) so that the work scholars do here will give them the skills and the credits they will need for whatever program they enter upon leaving the Maya Angelou Academy. Additionally, we offer GED preparation classes to those students who wish to enroll and who are at least 17 and have passed the qualifying examination.

Maya Angelou Transition Center

The Transition Center is a community-based re-integration program for recently incarcerated or DYRS committed youth that currently provides a highly structured educational program designed to facilitate a seamless transition for each scholar into the next phase of life. During this transition period, youth are educated and trained until they are ready to reenter a community school or employment.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates for the position will have dual certification in special education and another academic field, and at least two years of relevant experience.  We prefer special education candidates with strong training and experience in teaching reading and literacy skills, as these instructors will likely work extensively with students on developmental reading and writing skills.  We also prefer candidates with:

Experience in curriculum development;

Experience working with incarcerated or at-risk youth and

Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies.

In addition, teacher candidates should possess an unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed at school and beyond.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salaries are comparable to those paid by other charter schools in the metropolitan area.  We have a robust benefits plan, including health care coverage, a 403(b) savings plan, and a computer purchase assistance plan.
